View Full Version : Update 16.46 GMT
A small fix for the Linux and Win32 L4D Demo Dedicated Servers have been released. Please run hldsupdatetool (with either the game parameter of l4d_demo, or left4dead) to get the new files. This should allow dedicated servers to run.
Jason
So we're having to redistribute that now before we do anything else.
Sexy! Let us know olly ;)
Thanks for the update. Have you played the demo yet? Can't see any options to locate a server :(

This is the big thing I'm waiting on finding out.
If you cannot join your own server, then we won't be hosting it (as I would expect no other GSP will) because no-one is going to buy a server they can't directly connect to.

Apparantly you can through the console. But I haven't seen enough of the options in the matchmaker to tell if you can there. I played a SP campaign and was surprised at how well it ran on my aging PC :)
I'm hosting a dedicted server on my home connection atm. By the time I set it up and then loaded the game, the damn thing was full!
Still is. Could not see any options for making it invite only, just public. Will take another look at the config files.

I've just read something similar. Let's hope so.
Although really there should be the option to directly connect to any Ip of your choice.
Otherwise, who's going to want to buy the game servers?
And if no-one buys the game servers, no-one will buy the game!

Let us know. Will I need to raise another ticket for my broken server?

Yeah it seems unbelievable that Valve would have completely ignored this issue. How did they think css and tf2 got so popular?
This conversation below makes things even harder to fathom. Seems as though you can't even host your own private server (yet)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
No privacy features though.
sv_password is ignored. I run a private server for Shacknews.com and I have
strangers on it :)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
There isn't a way to do this right now, but it is something we're going to add.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Will have some test servers up within the next couple of hours. Pending that, we'll know whether we can host it in its current form :)
Only way i can see for directly connecting would be;

Interesting message:
----
"sv_allow_lobby_connect_only" = "1"
- If set, players may only join this server from matchmaking lobby, may not connect directly.
Set this to 0, connect via ip/dns and it allows you in, question is, is it still joinable via lobby
----
I guess if that works you can keep pesky matchmakers out lol..
Can we switch the server to L4D yet? Just asking! ;)
Mike's working on it right now. I'll check back again in half an hour
"Looking around, there actually IS a server browser!
It's called up with "openserverbrowser" console command, here's a snapshot:
http://img79.imageshack.us/my.php?image=finallyserverbrowserot5.jpg
It shows only specific servers set up for this though. Why the hell didn't Valve use this as standard?"
Copy pasted from other forums :P
Works for me :)
Once u have the server browser open, go to custom tab and refresh. Sorted.
Just waiting on INX now!

Has Mike had any luck?
Hi guys,
Sorry, I've had some bad news about an elderly relative, so a bit ergh.
Just caught up and Mike's still playing.
This isn't very straight forward, but we should have it working for you to switch to soon
Sorry to hear that about the relative dude :(
Will check back soon :)

Quote from L4D 411...
Valve's Erik Johnson responded on the mailing list with the difficulties in having a 'mixed system' (matchmaking and server list):
The case that will be difficult if not impossible to deal with will be a mixed system, where you have a private "clan server" for you and a friend, and you want two other public players to come in via matchmaking.
He also added in another message:
I'm saying that your case is one we're going to solve, but having a mixed setup is more difficult.
Part of getting this demo out ahead of time was to see what kinds of concerns server administrators had, and we hear what you are all saying.
We have our hands a bit full right now, but we're all talking about what we're going to do to make running a game server something that is worth it for you.
Valve is hard at work and we're sure they'll get something figured out.
So they are working on it...just hope they get it done quick :D
I secretly am confident Valve won't ****e on us GSP's, since we are part of their success and sales to date..

Tell it how it is Olly, GSP's ftw!! :p
Ok, this is seg faulting all over the place.
In layman (normal person's terms) its fecked up.
Trying to work out from very limited stuff now.
I do wonder if they actually test this stuff before releasing it.
Downloading a clean copy direct from steam now...
Will update soon
I've had some success getting one to run. Console keeps referring to a server.cfg. Has anyone got an example of one? (I'm guessing it's almost exactly the same as a HL2 config)
Anything here of use?

Right, got it working,
I need to see the CPU usage on this, in short...
Arse, just tried to join but it's full :(
Is it public?
Right, I'm happy with this now.
I just need to get it replaced so it'll work on all servers.
I think as a fair price for new customers, those wanting to get seperate servers, £9.99 a server would seem stupidly competitive :)
So what now Olly?
Think it'll be soonish? Also, what do I do about my server cost (switching from cs-s to L4D)?
its great to see that its working now :)
now the only thing we need is to put a password on the server...
this "friends-only" system in L4D doesnt work for me..even if i set it to that, other people join the server...

Nice work getting it running :) Can't wait to be able to switch mine over! :D So tired of this matchmaking system sending me to someones home PC on a terrible connection. Really ruins it.
Also sorry to hear about the bad news :(
Right, I'm guessing something on one of the early updates was wrong. I've fixed this and servers boot now.
So anyone having problems booting it...support ticket please.
For anyone wanting to buy it - www.inx-gaming.com/contact/sales-enquiries (http://www.inx-gaming.com/contact/sales-enquiries). We're going to do it for a tenner for the first month. Crikey :s. Existing customers can't switch to it for free without any price changes.
We are going to change our pricing tiering because this does use a lot more cpu than normal.
Please, in the meantime, I ask for your patience. Lots of people are going to want to play this at once, want admin (that doesn't exist etc).
Please bear with us :)
Trying to! Website is running REALLY slow for me :(

Hmm are you saying that switching to l4d will work now? As I just did that and it's doing the whole "installing every server under the sun" thing again.. :(
It will be working within 24 hours.
I can promise you Friday night you will be able to play.
At the moment there's stuff we need to sort like isolating the CPU spikes the servers cause in testing.
Guys,
If you'd like to switch, could you please raise a support ticket if you haven't already, so I can make sure it switches smoothly.
Done that already but with added woes.

I sent a support ticket earlier as my cp is locked up again. Looking forward to trying it out (and attempting to join without using the lobby lol).
valve released an update this morning to allow password protection so should help those that want to play only with friends
when you connect to a Server through the "connect "ip"" command, is there any way you can change the person youre playing as?
Does anyone know the console command for setting the difficulty?

I read that is was:
z_difficulty
with either advanced/easy/normal/impossible as the value. But I haven't tried it.
z_difficulty : 0 : , "rep", "cl" : Difficulty of the current game (Easy, Normal, Hard, Impossible)

Sweet! Works like a charm
