Team Fortress 2 update 16/12/2008

Hi guys,

There was a Team Fortress 2 server update, I missed out on adding yesterday. It was of course automatically applied to servers:

A required update for Team Fortress 2 has been released.  Please run hldsupdatetool to receive the update.  The specific changes include:

- Fixed overheal particle effect showing up incorrectly on disguised or cloaked spies
- Changed the achievement tracker to only be available in Team Fortress 2
- Added new teleporter sounds for upgrade levels 2 and 3
- Fixed engineers being able to upgrade the bomb cart’s dispenser found in Payload levels
- Fixed bomb cart’s dispenser being solid to players and projectiles

Don’t run a Left 4 Dead dedicated server on your home PC

One of the games that really has grabbed my interest over the past couple of months is Left 4 Dead. The dedicated game server environment introduced match making. Instead of the traditional method of searching steam lists for a Left 4 Dead dedicated server as a player, you can join a lobby, or you can choose to join directly to a Left 4 Dead server based on your settings. The problem is, there’s lots of people hosting the server locally, or in short running a Left 4 Dead dedicated server, on inferior hardware, and on their home connection.

We hate lag on Left 4 Dead servers

I thought lag on CSS was irritating. But on on a Left 4 Dead  dedicated server, it’s deadlier than a being attacked by a Hunter. Have you ever played on a L4D server where you can see that big RED dot next to your name, when you hit tab? That means crappy connection. It usually means someone is hosting the dedicated server from their home PC. Ouch.

With Call of Duty 4, it might ruin your perfect score. With Counterstrike Source, make you look a total noob. On Left 4 Dead, it gets you killed. I seem to find it always happens as horde rushes you. A 10 second lag while the Left 4 Dead dedicated server recovers, and then great…you come back and you are dead on the floor, with the miserable game music ringing in your ears.

Minimum requirements for a Left 4 Dead dedicated server

You really do need at least a Dual Core Xeon, or above to be running a Left 4 Dead game server. Nothing less if you don’t want to repeat the scenario above. For maximum requirements, we recommend:

Quad Core Xeon
At least 4GB RAM
100mbit+ connection

A full, 8 player versus Left 4 Dead dedicated server alone uses around 18% cpu on one core on a Quad Core, so you can imagine how it holds up on an inferior home PC, where don’t forget the owner is going to be playing (more CPU!) and they’ll have their usual array of programs open.

Incidently, I know of a company that hosts Left 4 Dead dedicated servers. Until next time ;)

Team Fortress 2 server update 12/12/08

Hi guys,

An update has been released for Team Fortress 2 game servers:

A required update for Team Fortress 2 has been released.  Please run hldsupdatetool to receive the update.  The specific changes include:

- The Engineer’s teleporters can now be upgraded to level three. It will recharge faster the higher level it is
- The Engineer’s dispensers can now be upgraded to level three. It will give out metal and heal faster as it is upgraded
- Spies will be able to recharge their cloaking ability by picking up ammo off of the ground or from health cabinets
- Some changes to the second part of the first stage of Goldrush to give the attackers more of an advantage
- Any weapons that fire bullets (shotguns, sniper’s machine gun, heavy’s minigun, etc.) can now break apart the Demoman’s stickybombs
- The icon on the HUD for a person calling for Medic will now give more information to the medic (if the target is low on health, on fire, etc.)
- Added an achievement tracker that will allow people to choose specific achievements that they are trying to get
- There is now a custom icon for death messages when the player was killed from a critical hit
- Added a new particle effect for when a player enters the water
- Added smoke to the feet of a rocket jumping soldier
- Players will now have some particles swirling around them so other players can see when they are overhealed

Microsoft XBE: No We Say!

One of my friends gave me a video on my USB stick, and I popped it in my (now returned and repaired) XBox 360 to have a look at it. It was a Monday night and a warning message popped up telling me that in order to watch it I had to download an update.

I was aware of a massive new XBox Live update that night, and I thought I might as well go along with it so that I could watch the video. This is the update that allows you to copy games onto your hard disk.

I regretted it later obviously, when I had to watch an awful pseudo-artsy video of… something. I’m not entirely clear what it was trying to convey but it was pretentious. Here’s a youtube link. Whatever, I ignored my instincts and pressed on. Until I got to the “Choose an Avatar” screen.

No thanks. They all looked awful, cutesy and anorexic. I pressed the “B” button to go past it.

Are you sure you don’t want to select an avatar?”

Yes, quite sure thanks, I want to watch my video.

Then I was taken to the new interface. Not only is the bottom two fifths of my background taken up with a horrible lime green… what is it supposed to be anyway? But in order to look at a friend on my list I have to scroll through every single friend I have. Wonderful. Microsoft have tried to take two aspects of their competitors’ work and have mashed them together and the effect is horrible. The whole interface is difficult, unintuitive, ugly, and just plain unnecessary. And the worst part is that it’s mandatory.

But at least I don’t have to choose an avatar, right?

Wrong! Last week Microsoft made it impossible to sign into XBox Live without selecting an avatar. Why?

Why do I need to have selected a cutesy and stupid looking avatar in order to play games online?

Why can I not select the interface that I preferred?

Why is this new attempt to appeal to younger players being forced on the older ones without them having a choice?

Who made this decision, and who thought that it was a good idea to force it on gamers who don’t want it?

Why COD5 servers are dwarfed by Call of Duty 4 servers

Just Google, and you’ll see COD5 outsold Call of Duty 4, 2:1 in the first few weeks. That’s one hell of a headstart on gamers looking for COD5 servers. So why, when you search for UK game servers, are there just over 1800 Call of Duty 4 servers online (nearly 5,000 playing as I write this), and in comparison just over 700 COD5 servers, and half the amount of players online right now?

Also considering Call of Duty 4 gameservers have dropped off recently (as Call of Duty 5 WAW was released!) What does that tell you about COD5 servers? Or the lack of!

Please sir, let us run COD5 servers

It might suggest that some gaming clans wanting to run COD5 servers can’t, because it’s only available on Windows right now. A kind member on the linux COD mailing list recently published a tutorial on running COD5 on Linux, using a program called Wine. That’s great, but two problems with running servers through Wine:

  • It’s not the most stable of solutions
  • It increases CPU usage drastically

It’s not the answer. More worryingly, was after what was published – COD5 linux servers would be available, why are they not, over a month since the release of the game?

The problem is, no-one really knows. No-one knows when COD5 servers will be available to run on Linux. No-one knows whether it might be the 1.1 and upcoming 1.2 patches that are causing the delay. No-one knows!

We’ve ended up setting up a Windows platform to run Call of Duty 5 servers on. We didn’t want to, like the many clans and communities.

It just seems odd, because surely financially, more COD5 servers = more games sold. More money for the developers and publishers.

The server stats speak for themselves. I wonder if the developers will listen to the community for the release of Call of Duty 6? I don’t hold up much hope.

We all tell a little white lie every so often.

There’s the odd white lie, and there’s blatant lies. Unfortunately when it comes to stretching the truth, some internet businesses are no different, and neither are some server hosts. Whether it’s a Call of Duty 4, Team Fortress 2, or Counterstrike server host you are looking for, here’s three common porkies to beware of when choosing the next host for your clan’s gameserver:

  • Do they really offer the 24/7 support advertised?
  • Are they really hosting gameservers from their own datacentre?
  • When they talk about we is it we, or me?

The great 24/7 support server host lie

Sometimes I feel like a stuck record going on about this one. I probably am.  But it does erk me those one-man server hosts (see below) claiming 24/7 support. If your bank claimed to be open 24/7, and it wasn’t, you’d call your local outsourced call centre and give them a jolly good piece of your mind.

So it shocks me, frequently those server hosts that use the whole 24/7 support thing as the main selling point. Telephone numbers that always go through to answer machine. Emails and support tickets unanswered for days. If only gameservers weren’t so important, and out lifeline! In fact, I had a shock the other day. My own public Call of Duty 4 server went down. I was shaking with fear. I nearly had to go out. Can you believe it? Luckily I was able to phone myself, and got the server rebooted.

But what if you’ve already bought a gameserver from a server host that claims 24/7 support when they don’t? Would it be acceptable for the server to go down at 6pm on a Friday night, and your server host doesn’t respond until Tuesday?

Some server hosts think the fact a website is potentially online 24/7, and that you can fill out an online contact form at 4am, means they offer 24/7. Don’t fall for it. They might think it means support 24/7 . It doesn’t.

My gameserver host has their own datacentre

This comes a close second on the lie scoreboard to the 24/7 myth.

There’s nothing wrong with not owning a datacentre. Let’s face it, if you are in the know you’ll understand already a minimum datacentre budget is going to cost you upwards of half a million to kit out. So it’s not really practical budget wise, for gameserver hosting.

But what is a concern is those hosts, that copy and paste data centre specs from their dedicated server host, and conveniently pass it off as their own.

Beware. Not knowing you do get found out for this, says a lot about this kind of server host.

Server hosting, to we or not to we

That is the question. There’s nothing wrong with a one man company. I’m sure you wouldn’t tip your window cleaner off his ladder, because the window washing waster doesn’t have 30 employees. Well you might if you are a tad sadistic, or he’s not cleaning the windows very well (my window cleaner, beware). The same logic applies to a game server. There’s lots of single man (or girl) server hosts working 8-10 hours a day, and providing excellent service.

But what if the me suddenly becomes a we. The server host that tells you you need to contact support, but it’s actually the same person. The clan server host that claims he has 3 support staff….but he’s actually paying them with a COD 4 server and a bag of nuts.

Being liberal with the truth, stretching the truth, or outright lying?

All my personal opinion, but a hopefully a few pointers to keep you informed all the same ;)

Why affordable gameservers are usually better

You wouldn’t know there is a credit crunch on. Houses being repossessed. People out of work, unable to go to the pub, or eat out at their favourite restaurant. People staying in with cheap bottles of vodka, and turning to old games. The economy collapsing before us.

So why are gameserver providers getting cheaper?

Well at least, you wouldn’t know if you were a gameserver host. Ever day I witness an ongoing challenge to host gameservers cheaper, and ‘better’. Claims of more affordable. Affordable to the person renting the clan server, perhaps. Affordable to the provider hosting the server?

It really hit me just now, when someone on MSN Messenger just claimed we were expensive because he could get a 32 slot Call of Duty 4 gameserver for £23.  BTW, that’s £23 for 12 months. Blimey. Ok, so there’s cheap, and there’s…..suicidal. Some people are thick.

I don’t think so. A few facts to consider:

  • Power and rack prices have increased up to 6x what they were 4 years ago.
  • So gameservers are far more costly to host on dedicated servers.
  • Game server customers expect more, and rightly so.
  • Granted server hardware is more powerful, but that doesn’t cancel out the huge cost increases.

‘Affordable’ versus ‘Cheap’ clanservers, the myth uncovered!

So you might ask, why do gameserver hosts price themselves so cheap? What do you call affordable game servers.  And I won’t try and claim this applies to every host. Economies of scale means larger hosts can push out gameservers at a cheap price, because their overheads are lower.

But the kiddie host with the one old colocated server, pushing the old 50p a slot. Do me a favour. It does not add up. So back to the point, why are these clanserver hosts doing it so cheap? And is it affordable?

In a nutshell, no.

Such gameserver hosts are very often:

  • Running at a loss, because it’s only £20-£30 to lose each month
  • License fees, what license fees? Are you sure your Ventrilo / Teamspeak 2 server is authorised. I’m sure you wouldn’t want it going offline halfway through a war ;)
  • Not offering the 24/7 support they claim. Do you think someone doesn’t sleep to lose money? I’d have them commited if they were.
  • Unable to compete with the big players. They cannot beat their level of support, uptime, and promises. There’s nothing unique in what they offer. They are just another one of many gameserver hosts. So what’s the *only* thing they can do? You guessed it, price. They make themselves Cheaper. And most definitely they’ll be the cheapest gameserver host on the internet. Yeah, right

So why are affordable gameservers better?

With total reference to the above, any gameserver host worth its salt will not be looking at whether they can pay their hosting bills at the end of the month. They will be looking at the next 12 months, and beyond that.

I would like to think an honest, and affordable gameserver provider will not pluck prices from the sky, in order to compete on the only thing they can do- being cheap.

Clanserver providers that price themselves as affordable, are thinking about keeping in business, and won’t be running away with your rental fees.

To the boys, you remember what you were told about cheap girls? Well gameservers aren’t any different.

And finally, remember. If it looks too good to be true. It probably is.

Zombie Panic Source update 06/12

A required update for Left 4 Dead has been released.  Please run hldsupdatetool to receive it.  The specific changes include:

- Fixed Infected Players melee pushing large objects to block the survivors path
- Fixed +lobby exploit
- Fixed exploit of “hugging” the Witch from behind where she can’t hit you
- Fixed players not being kicked from a vote by changing their name before it succeeds
- Disabled difficulty change votes from the console in versus mode

L4D update – 05/12/2008

An update has been released for Left 4 Dead gameservers:

A required update for Left 4 Dead is now available.  Please run hldsupdatetool to receive this update.  The specific changes include:

- Finding a dedicated server when starting the game from a lobby is now faster and more reliable
- Versus mode is now locked to Normal difficulty
- Difficulty on a server is now locked to the one set by the lobby reservation
- Fixed lagouts/spikes after level transition
- Fixed directory issue with spray logs in some cases
- Fixed video settings not saving after closing video options dialog
- Corrected a boomer suicide exploit
- Several minor localization fixes
- Fixed a error were disabling cheats would incorrectly reset data

Zombie Panic Source Update (1.4.1)

Hi guys,

An update has been released for Zombie Panic Source game servers, detailed below:

=====1.4.1 (12-1-2008) =======
-Autovision and noscoot cvars should now save settings.
-Zombies can now lunge “through” knockback.
-Bullet knockback has been significantly reduced. (Slowdown on bullet hits only apply now).
-If a carrier disconnects, a new carrier will be chosen.
-sv_usescustom cvar now added for people who use custom plugins. This will help differentiate standard gameplay servers from ones with gameplay modifications.
-Fixes for various ladder bugs.
-Fixes for various maps.
-Flashlight will now flicker out after extended use, but will recharge at the same rate. Use it sparingly.
-Some minor sound tweaks.
-Infections have mutated, and no longer take an exact amount of time to fully turn a human.
-Zombies can no longer walk. Also walk is now disabled during panic.
-Stamina meter now indicates whether or not you are walking.
-Toggle keys no longer stall out respawning.
-Hitting the lunge key without taking any action should now have very little effect on your feed-o-meter.
-Collision system is now a bit smoother.
-Tweaked M4 recoil, and M4/Shotgun damage levels.
-Bug where dryfire would repeat if you started to shoot a rifle while reloading is fixed.
-You can no longer drop ammo while you are trying to reload a gun.
-A few helpful messages will show up if you are trying to do something that an in-game timer prevents you from doing too often.
-Alt firing while underwater with certain guns no longer plays a dryfire sound.
-Backwards bunnyhopping is no longer possible.
-Fixed a bug that prevented footstep sounds from playing when you are extremely weighed down.
-Removed some meaningless console errors.

To run the update, either run the Update button on the INX control panel, or simply reboot the server.
